Opening Thoughts, Allen Weber

------------------------------------------------------------

Even though a lot of you are up in the frigid tundra in the North, soon it will be summer. When summer comes and even in the cold winter times, people drink a lot of soft drinks.

It has been shown that carbonated soft drinks are bad for your bones. It has been shown that carbonated soft drinks are linked to obesity... yes, even the diet drinks.

Would it surprise you to know that as early as 1990 the US FDA knew that carbonated soft drinks contain the proven cancer causing (Carcinogen) chemical Benzene? And they did absolutely nothing about it?

Oh the shock of it all. They knew about it, yet did nothing about it... perhaps they were to busy hunting down those cherries disguised as drugs (see story at When is a cherry a drug?

According to a story The Benzene Trail by Chris Mercer who is editor on BeverageDaily.com and DairyReporter.com. And he was the first to break the current story on benzene in soft drinks that has now attracted attention from major media organisations around the world - just so you know his credentials... “The gamble by US authorities 15 years ago to let the industry deal with benzene residues in soft drinks has failed, and instead only kept those who needed to know in the dark.” And now benzene levels in some carbonated soft drinks are higher than the legal levels allowed in drinking water!”

Chris Mercer reported that “the FDA and US soft drinks association have known about this for 15 years, as testified by an internal FDA memo, dated January 1991.

One FDA chemist, who was also at the meetings with industry back then, told BeverageDaily.com the industry had agreed to &lquo;get the word out and reformulate&rquo;. No public announcement was, therefore, ever made.”

Gee... What a surprise. Instead of doing their job, they were to busy approving half assed tests from big pharma and approving all sorts of poisions... ooops I mean drugs. You know, the ones that seem to be recalled and warnings put out almost every single week!

Think you have a way out by drinking diet soda?

Well, think again bucko...

Carbonated Diet Soft Drinks Are Even More Hazardous!

According to a memo from DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH & HUMAN SERVICES
Public Health Service Dated January 18, 1991
From: Supervisory Chemist, Indirect Food Additives Section, FFB, DFCT, HFF-4 13
Memo Subject: Summary of Information on Benzene Formation in Food Products
To: Chief, Food Formulation Branch, Division of Food Chemistry and Technology, HFF-413

“Sweeteners are thought to inhibit the reaction, as the problem seems most noticeable in diet drinks.”

The problem is that when two common ingredients – sodium benzoate and ascorbic acid (vitamin C)react together to cause benzene formation. I would bet that you can also find benzene in canned foods as well.

It's even worse when heat and/or light get mixed into the equation.

This is a really good excuse to..

Read The Labels On The Foods You Buy.

Here is my suggestion. Order C-Splash™ and mix it into water. You may even want to include an envelope of it in your child's lunch bag/box. They can get a bottled water, tear the envelope open and mix it in. Then they have a great way to insure they are getting enough water, with all natural substances, no carbonation, no artificial sweeteners either.

And a note to everyone who bought Chocodant™ our Gourmet tasting dark chocolate, cocoa powdered supplement drink mix...

Here is a new recipe I just tried. It tastes Fantastic!

Lately here in Sunny Jacksonville Florida we have been indulging in great weather, and smoothies.

Here is a great recipe. Try it I think you'll flip!

Ready?

Ok?

Get out your blender.

Ingredients

  • Take some soy milk (16 - 20 oz)
  • 6-8 frozen strawberries.
  • 1 whole bananna (peeled of course)
  • Honey to taste
  • 1 tablespoon of Chocodant.
  • Ground cinnamon to taste

Directions:

Pour in the soy milk and add all the frozen strawberries. Grind until the strawberries are chopped and blended with the soy milk.

Add some honey and cinnamon.

Blend

Add the whole bananna - Yeah... take the peel OFF First

Add 1 tablespoon of Chocodant

Blend

Change blender speed to “Whip”

Pour into glasses and enjoy.

This smoothie is so rich, so creamy, so cholaty. It's almost like eating a strawberry bananna split with fudge topping.

Try it and let me know how you like it.

I'd also love to see the recipes you come up with using Chocodant.

If you would like to get some Chocodant, we have a special $1.00 off a bottle for the first 10 people who order. Use Discount Coupon Code 9a8207 when you place your order. Limit: 1 per customer.

Spotlight On: Cancer Awareness Subtle Test Part II

------------------------------------------------------------

Let's Continue from last month Downy Hair May Be A Sign of Cancer

Carcinoma of the Esophagus - Esophagus Cancer

When you eat food, and you regularily feel that the food stays in your throat... and not because you are eating big clumps that you did not chew enough, you should look into this.

You should go and either get an X-ray or CT checkup (NOTE: CT (computed tomography) screening produces a comprehensive, computerized scan of the body that is used to detect lung cancer, colon cancer, and, in some cases, heart disease.)

By using this scan, you can find early stage esophagus cancer.

When you find it hard to swallow and the feeling of food caught in your throat, or sometimes you find swallowing very hard to do, it may be caused of a growing tumor on your esophagus.

Difficulty when swallowing is the sensation that food is stuck in the throat or upper chest. This may be felt high in the neck or lower down, behind the breastbone (sternum). Or in your larynx specifically your Adam's apple.

Frequently, symptoms of chest pain, food stuck in the throat, heaviness or pressure in the neck or upper chest, are the result of swallowing difficulties.

Early esophageal cancer usually does not cause symptoms. However, as the cancer grows, symptoms may include:

  • Difficult or painful swallowing
  • Severe weight loss
  • Pain in the throat or back, behind the breastbone or between the shoulder blades
  • Hoarseness or chronic cough
  • Vomiting
  • Coughing up blood

These symptoms may be caused by esophageal cancer or by other conditions. It is important to check with a doctor.

Kidney Cancer

If you find blood in your urine and do not feel pain when urinating.

Your Ureter Urinary Bladder and Urethra are connected with your kidney. This tells you the importance of your kidney in expelling waste and poisions from your system.

The ureters are the tubes that connect each kidney to the bladder. The kidneys clean the blood and filter waste from it. This process produces a liquid waste, urine. Urine flows from the kidneys through the ureters to the bladder. The urine is stored in the bladder until a person urinates. During urination, the urine leaves the body by passing from the bladder through another tube, the urethra, which is open at one end.

Kidney cancer bleeding is caused by tumors growing. This causes pressure and the pressure damages the blood vein.

The “Three (3) Glass Urine Test” can distinguish where the blood is coming from.

Here's how it works....

  • The early morning “First Urnination”
  • The first part of the urination goes into one glass.
  • The second part goes into another glass
  • and the last part goes into a third glass.

And this is how to judge the results:

  • If you find blood in the first glass, it most likely means it is a problem in the urethra.
  • If you find blood in the second and third glass it most likely is a problem in the urinary bladder.
  • If you find blood in all three glasses and it appears to be even amounts, that points to a problem in your kidneys

Stomach Cancer

No one knows the exact causes of stomach cancer. Doctors often cannot explain why one person develops this disease and another does not.

If you regularily experience A dull pain in your chest. Now normally people think of pain in the chest as the heart area, but in medical terms it is the upper chest, or stomach. If you find your stomach is not comfortable and feel dull pain but the pain grows stronger (deeper or heavier). Go and check your stomach.

This is especially critical for anyone with chronic stomach pain. The original symptoms change such as pain that feels very strong and burning pain in your stomach. It may not be ulcers... it may be cancer, so do yourself a favor and get it checked out now.

Research has shown that people with certain risk factors are more likely than others to develop stomach cancer. A risk factor is something that may increase the chance of developing a disease.

Studies have found the following risk factors for stomach cancer:

  • Age: Most people with this disease are 72 or older.
  • Sex: Men are more likely than women to develop stomach cancer.
  • Race: Stomach cancer is more common in Asian, Pacific Islander, Hispanic, and African Americans than in non-Hispanic white Americans.
  • Diet: Studies suggest that people who eat a diet high in foods that are smoked, salted, or pickled may be at increased risk for stomach cancer. On the other hand, eating fresh fruits and vegetables may protect against this disease.
  • Helicobacter pylori infection: H. pylori is a type of bacteria that commonly lives in the stomach. H. pylori infection increases the risk of stomach inflammation and stomach ulcers. It also increases the risk of stomach cancer, but only a small number of infected people develop stomach cancer.

Although infection increases the risk, cancer is not contagious. You cannot catch stomach cancer from another person who has it.

  • Smoking: People who smoke are more likely to develop stomach cancer than people who do not smoke.
  • Certain health problems: Conditions that cause inflammation or other problems in the stomach may increase the risk of stomach cancer:
    • Stomach surgery
    • Chronic gastritis (long-term inflammation of the stomach lining)
    • Pernicious anemia (a blood disease that affects the stomach)
  • Family history: A rare type of stomach cancer runs in some families.

Most people who have known risk factors do not develop stomach cancer. For example, many people have H. pylori in their stomach but never develop cancer. On the other hand, people who do develop the disease sometimes have no known risk factors.

Oral Cancer including gum cancer, tounge cancer, lip cancer

Early Sign

Recurring stomatocace (ulcers on the cheeks, tongue, and lips)

Causes, incidence, and risk factors

Oral or mouth cancer most commonly involves the tissue of the lips or the tongue. It may also occur on the floor of the mouth, cheek lining, gingiva (gums), or palate (roof of the mouth). Most oral cancers look very similar under the microscope and are called squamous cell carcinomas. These are malignant and tend to spread rapidly.

Smoking and other tobacco use are associated with 70-80% of oral cancer cases. Smoke and heat from cigarettes, cigars, and pipes irritate the mucous membranes of the mouth. Use of chewing tobacco or snuff causes irritation from direct contact with the mucous membranes. Heavy alcohol use is another high-risk activity associated with oral cancer.

Other risks include poor dental and oral hygiene and chronic irritation (such as that from rough teeth, dentures, or fillings). Some oral cancers begin as leukoplakia or mouth ulcers. Oral cancer accounts for about 8% of all malignant growths. Men are affected twice as often as women, particularly men older than 40.

Gum cancer often happens in the bottom gum (front and back). In the early stage, the symptoms you can see are little ulcers, or white blisters.

If you notice any changes in the appearance of your mouth or any of the following symptoms, go to your dentist immediately because it might be a warning sign of cancer:

  • A mouth sore or irritation that does not heal
  • Color changes such as the development of a red or white patch in your mouth
  • Pain, tenderness or numbness anywhere in your mouth or lips
  • A lump, thickening, rough spot, crust or small eroded area
  • Difficulty in chewing, swallowing, speaking or moving your jaw or tongue
  • Change in your bite

A Dentist can check out your mouth and find early signs of oral cancer. THat is why it is a good idea to get a dental check-up

Here are some signs:

Do You Have A Skin Lesion, Lump, or Ulcer:

  • On the tongue, lip, or other mouth area
  • Usually small
  • Most often pale colored, may be dark or discolored
  • May be a deep, hard edged crack in the tissue
  • Usually painless initially
  • May develop a burning sensation or pain when the tumor is advanced

Additional symptoms that may be associated with this disease:

  • Tongue problems (PAIN IN THE TONGUE, swelling of the tounge)
  • Swallowing difficulty
  • Mouth sores
  • Abnormal taste

Lip Cancer

Lip cancer often happens in the vermillion border mucosa (the red outer border of your lip). The first warning sign is a white spot on the border area.

If the spot is higher than the surface and is harder than the lip, and has a rough surface, and feels like downy hair (see last issue), get checked out because this may be an early stage of lip cancer.

Some of the spots may be in the shape of cauliflower (and you don't even need to be a boxer to get that shape).

If you find this, do not treat it as a normal “harmless” ulcer.

Here is what you can do:

  • Minimize or avoid smoking or other tobacco use.
  • Minimize alcohol use.
  • Practice good oral hygiene.
  • Have dental problems corrected.
  • Have the soft tissue of your mouth examined once a year. Many oral cancers are discovered by routine dental examination.

Cervical Cancer

You can see colporrhagia after sex. (bleeding)

This means that the touch has caused bleeding. If you don't pay attention to this danger signal, the following problem is unroutinely bleeding, and the whites (leukorrhea) will increase. In the beginning it will be like water, later becoming milky white like the water after rinsing rice before cooking it.

Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer often does not cause symptoms for many years. By the time symptoms occur, the disease may have spread beyond the prostate. When symptoms do occur, they may include:

  • Frequent urination, especially at night
  • Inability to urinate
  • Trouble starting or holding back urination
  • A weak or interrupted flow of urine
  • Painful or burning urination
  • Blood in the urine or semen
  • Painful ejaculation
  • Frequent pain in the lower back, hips, or upper thighs

These can be symptoms of cancer, but more often they are symptoms of noncancerous conditions. It is important to check with a doctor.

á-TOCOPHERYL SUCCINATE INDUCES APOPTOSIS IN PROSTATE CANCER CELLS IN PART THROUGH INHIBITION OF BCL-XL/BCL-2 FUNCTION

Chung-Wai Shiau†, Jui-Wen Huang†, Da-Sheng Wang†, Jing-Ru Weng§, Chih-Cheng Yang†, Chia-Hui Lin†, Chenglong Li†, and Ching-Shih Chen†

Running Title: á-Tocopheryl succinate is a Bcl-xL/Bcl-2 inhibitor

Although the antitumor effect of á-tocopheryl succinate (vitamin E succinate) has been well demonstrated, its underlying mechanism remains elusive. This study provides evidence that inhibition of Bcl-xL/Bcl-2 function represents a major pathway whereby á-tocopheryl succinate mediates apoptosis induction in prostate cancer cells. Note: apoptosis is the cells committing suicide

Vitamin E succinate suppresses prostate tumor growth by inducing apoptosis.

Int J Cancer. 2006 May 15;118(10):2441-7.

Malafa MP, Fokum FD, Andoh J, Neitzel LT, Bandyopadhyay S, Zhan R, Iiizumi M, Furuta E, Horvath E, Watabe K.

Prostate cancer is a major cause of cancer death and morbidity in western countries. However, because of its intrinsic nature of chemoresistance, there is only limited systemic therapy available for the patients. Vitamin E (VE) has been under intensive study as a chemopreventive agent for various types of cancers. Preclinical studies suggest that vitamin E succinate (VES) is the most effective antitumor analogue of VE, yet there are scarce studies of VES in prostate cancer. In this study, we investigated the effects of VES on a panel of prostate cancer cells, and a xenograft model of prostate cancer. Our results indicate that VES significantly inhibited proliferation and induced apoptosis of prostate cancer cell lines in a dose and time dependent manner. The results of microarray analysis followed by real-time RT-PCR and inhibitor analyses indicated that the VES-induced apoptosis is mediated by caspase-4 in prostate tumor cells. In our animal model of prostate cancer in SCID mouse, daily injection of VES significantly suppressed tumor growth as well as lung metastases. These results suggest a potential therapeutic utility of VES for patients with prostate cancer.

Can prostate cancer be prevented?

Klein EA.

Nat Clin Pract Urol. 2005 Jan;2(1):24-31.

Section of Urologic Oncology, Glickman Urological Institute.

The goal of primary chemoprevention is to decrease the incidence of a given cancer, simultaneously reducing both treatment-related adverse events and mortality. Prostate cancer is an attractive and appropriate target for primary prevention because of its incidence, prevalence, and disease-related mortality; its long latency and molecular pathogenesis; and epidemiologic data indicating that modifiable environmental factors may decrease risk. The Prostate Cancer Prevention Trial (PCPT) demonstrated that finasteride can prevent prostate cancer, albeit with an apparently increased risk of high-grade disease. A substantial amount of epidemiologic, molecular, and clinical evidence suggests that both selenium and vitamin E might also prevent prostate cancer, and this combination is being tested in the Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial (SELECT). Ultimately, the adoption of a preventive strategy hinges on its potential benefits weighed against the potential risks of the specific agents used

Does oxygenated water support aerobic performance and lactate kinetics?

Int J Sports Med. 2006 Mar;27(3):232-5.

Leibetseder V, Strauss-Blasche G, Marktl W, Ekmekcioglu C.

Center for Physiology and Pathophysiology, Medical University Vienna, Vienna, Austria.

It has been asserted that the consumption of oxygenated water can support physical working capacity. As this has not been accurately investigated yet we analyzed effects of a two-week period of daily O (2)-water ingestion on spiroergometric parameters and lactate metabolism in healthy adults. Twenty men (24 +/- 2.5 years of age) with comparable aerobic abilities performed four exhaustive bicycle spiroergometric tests. Applying a double-blind crossover study design 10 subjects drank 1.5 liters of highly oxygenated water every day during the two weeks between the initial two tests whereas the other group consumed 1.5 liters untreated water from the same spring. After a two-week wash-out period subjects underwent a second period consuming the opposite type of water. Spiroergometric parameters and lactate kinetics between both groups at submaximal and maximal levels were analyzed using a MANOVA. Results showed no significant influence on aerobic parameters or lactate metabolism, neither at submaximal nor at maximal levels (all p-values >/= 0.050). Merely increments of V.EO (2) at submaximal levels were demonstrable (p = 0.048). We conclude that the consumption of oxygenated water does not enhance aerobic performance or lactate kinetics in standardized laboratory testing.
