Spotlight On: Nutrient Supply Center
- Fair Tale of Sweet Potato

------------------------------------------------------------

Yes, it is spelled potato, no “e” at the end. Unless you are talking about the plural.

In China, the local slang name for Sweet Potato is “Ground Melon.”

Originally it was grown in Central and South America. Columbus brought it to Spain.

In the mid 16th Century, it was brought to the Philippines. During the Ming Dynasty it was brought to Fujian Province, China. The person who brought it is named Chen Zheng Long.

Sweet potato is a low calorie food, while having very high nutrition.

Every hundred grams of FRESH sweet potato has 2.3 grams of protein. It has 29 grams of sugar. This sugar is a combination of maltobiose (maltose) and glucose. And 18 mg of calcium. 30 mg of viatmin C, and phosphate, beta carotene, combine this with a high percent of fiber and ”It's a winnah!”

Besides sweet potato also has various amino acids that are crucial to human life. The percentage of amino acids are higher than that found in rice and flour. That is why nutrients in sweet potato are very complete.

Speaking of health care functions, from Chinese herbal medical point sweet potato can provide nutrients to the stomach, and spleen. It also revitalize the blood and regenerate “Jing Chi” (Energy Chi). Additionally, it helps avoid constapation (hear that Dulcolax, Senokot, and other drugs???). Use sweet potatoes instead.

According to scientific research it has been proven that eating more sweet potaot can reduce choldeserol in the blood. It can also reduce the fat directly under the skin (think of a duck or chicken, and you see the fat under the skin... this is what I am talking about getting reduced in people eating sweet potatoes).

It will also help to prevent obesity (unless you eat huge amounts of sweet potatoes every day, because to much of anything is not good). The starch in sweet potatoes can help you to feel full easily. It can also help prevent you from over-eating.

Sweet potatoes are a “Sodium based” food. This means that it is alkaline so it can help neutralize the excess accumulated acids in your stomach. Since it has a high percentage of fiber, it can help your intestines move faster. This means that it can help keep your intestines healthy. It gets the poisions out of your intestines faster.

Sweet potato has collegen and polysaccharose. This means that it can help to keep your skin smooth and shiny. At the same time, it can maintain your blood vein elasticity, which will help yoru blood to flow smoother. It can also help prevent hardening of the arteries and hardening of blood veins. It will decompose extra cholesterol in your body, and it's a cancer preventative. It also helps you live a longer healthier life.

Now days, in modern life, low cost complete nutrition is very hard to get, but sweet potatoes can solve this problem. So people are starting to pay more and more attention to sweet potatoes. Soon you will find this in candy, desserts (besides sweet potato pie... yum!), breads, and other healthy versions of foods. More and more, sweet potatoes are becoming very important ingredients.

Sweet potato, is also used in popular preperations to reduce weight. It can be steamed, boiled, roasted, but not fried. You may see it in “diet pills” listed as “Ipomoea batatas” which is the technical name for sweet potato.

Because sweet potato is rich in fiber making it easy for your to feel full, low calorie, rich in nutrition, good for your health, adds fresh vegetable to your diet. So if you eat this every day, in one month you can see weight loss results. No pills, just by adding sweet potatoes to your diet.

Another trick to use sweet potato in weight loss, is don't eat sweet potatoes after 12:00 noon, because in the morning your stomach and digestive systems is in the “Golden period” of absorbing nutrition. After 12:00 your metabolism becomes slower. So the sugar becomes a burden to your body.

It doesn't hurt to buy a whole bunch of sweet potatoes, clean them, roast them all in your oven, and then put them in your fridge and when you need them eat them cold or warm as a golden treat.

Study: Pesticides May Harm Kids' Brains, IQs

http://www.newsmax.com/archives/articles/2006/3/27/103537.shtml?s=he

Thousands Of Children Under Age Six May Well Be Poisoned With Pesticides Each Year

Concern about children’s potential exposure to pesticides has only mounted with a more recent data indicating that each day more than a million children under age six are eating foods contaminated with organophosphate pesticides at levels above that determined by EPA to be a safe daily dose. Moreover, organophosphates are chemicals known to be toxic to children’s developing brains. These same pesticides have been found to linger on counter tops, in carpets, even on plush children’s’toys, several weeks or months after they are applied in the home. Studies have also reported an association between home pesticide use and childhood leukemia,’ and an analysis of phone calls to poison control centers suggests that thousands of children under age six may well be poisoned with pesticides each year.

Preventive effects of a soy-based diet supplemented with stevioside on the development of the metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes in Zucker diabetic fatty rats.

Dyrskog SE, Jeppesen PB, Colombo M, Abudula R, Hermansen K.

Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism C, Aarhus University Hospital, Aarhus Sygehus THG, 8000 Aarhus C., Denmark.

The world witnesses an explosive increase in diabetes, demanding intensified prevention and treatment not least for the low-income population. The plant, Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni, has been used for the treatment of diabetes in traditional medicine.

We have previously demonstrated that stevioside, a diterpene glycoside isolated from the plant Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni, possesses insulinotropic, glucagonostatic, antihyperglycemic, and blood pressure-lowering effects in animal studies. We have also found that a dietary supplement, Abalon, of soy protein, isoflavones, and cotyledon fiber has beneficial effects on cardiovascular risk markers in type 2 diabetes. The aim of this study was to investigate if the combination of stevioside and a dietary supplement of soy protein possesses beneficial qualities in the treatment of type 2 diabetes and the metabolic syndrome.

We randomized male Zucker diabetic fatty rats into 4 groups and fed them the different test diets for 10 weeks: (A) standard carbohydrate-rich laboratory diet (chow), (B) chow+stevioside (0.03 g/kg body weight [BW] per day), (C) 50% soy (Abalon)+50% chow (adjusted for vitamins and minerals), and (D) 50% soy (Abalon)+50% chow+stevioside 0.03 g/kg BW per day.

We measured plasma glucose, blood pressure, weight, and food intake once weekly. The animals were equipped with an intra-arterial catheter, and at week 10, the conscious rats underwent an intra-arterial glucose tolerance test (2.0 g/kg BW). Stevioside exerts beneficial effects in type 2 diabetic Zucker diabetic fatty rats, that is, lowers blood glucose (area under the glucose curve [AUC(30min)]: group A vs B, a 19% reduction; and group C vs D, a 12% reduction; P<.001). We did not detect any effect on insulin or glucagon responses.

After 2 weeks of treatment, a decrease in the systolic blood pressure was observed in the stevioside-treated groups (P<.01). Abalon had beneficial effects on cardiovascular risk markers, that is, (1) lowers total cholesterol (P<.01), (2) reduces triglycerides (P=.01), and (3) reduces free fatty acids (P<.001).

The combination of stevioside and soy supplementation appears to possess the potential as effective treatment of a number of the characteristic features of the metabolic syndrome, that is, hyperglycemia, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. A long-term human study of the concept in type 2 diabetic subjects is needed to verify these promising results in animal diabetes.

How To Save Your Life In A Crowd

Recently I have been reading a fascinating book on human behaivor... (yeah I know...Yawn for some of you).

Anyway, I'm going to give you some advice on how to save your life if you are ever:

  • Involved in a serious car crash and need assistance and there are a lot of people on the street who saw it.
  • How to get help if you are having a medical emergency in public and there are a lot of people milling around.
  • You are being victimized by a violent crime, and there are people around.

This last one brings me to the situation in March 1964 of a young woman named Catherine Genovese she was killed in the morning while 38 different people watched from their apartments in Kew Gardens NY (the borough of Queens in New York City).

She was attacked three (3) different times within a half an hour by the same assailant over that half hour.

She repeatedly screamed for help.

People saw it happening... yet no one did a thing to lift a finger. No one called the police.

Do you know why?

No?

It's not because the people were to afraid of a knife weilding thug who was repeatedly stabbing her while she screamed for help. The people witnessing this murder were in their apartments, so they were in no danger of being attacked themselves.

It's not because the people of New York are un-caring... they do care

Give up?

Alllllrity Then

Here's why and here's how you can avoid the same fate.

When Catherine Genovese was attacked, and all those people saw her being attacked, everyone who saw it did not see other people acting (picking up the phone, going down to intervene, etc.) so they all acted the same.

This is called Group Think.

Mob mentality.

It can be very dangerous to you.

So how does this help you if you are facing an emergency in public and you want people to help?

Here's how.

People act differently in groups and when alone. So you signal or call out individual people from the group, rather than let them pass you by.

“Hey you in the blue jacket...stop... I'm having an emergency..call 911! Please do it now.”

Or

“Hey you with the red hair and sunglasses, stop, help me move to the shade”

"Hey you..."

You get the idea.

And soon many other people will jump in and help. One starts it's like giving permission for the rest to follow.

By calling out people individually, you move them from group think into individual action. Keep this in mind, in the future it may just save your life.
