Opening Thoughts, Allen Weber
------------------------------------------------------------
Some interesting things have been going on lately. It looks like the FTC is finally - YES - Finally cracking down on spammers, and some of the bogus health products.
Witness.
FTC Halts Seaweed Patch Weight-Loss Claims
Look, putting on a patch is not going to make you lose weight. Taking a magic pill is not going to make you lose weight. You are not going to lose weight while you sleep.
Want to lose weight?
- Eat right (whole foods not processed foods).
- Get a little exercise.
- Change your lifestyle.
- Drink Vinegar.
The FTC filed charges against Global Web Productions, a spam enterprise also selling questionable diet patches, which operates out of Australia and New Zealand.
The FTC said Global Web sent approximately 400,000 spam messages between January and April.
The FTC has cracked down on two Unsolicited Commercial Email -aka Spam (the “S” word) operations that have clogged the Internet with millions of deceptive messages and violated federal laws. A complaint targeting Detroit-based Phoenix Avatar was developed in a joint investigation with the U.S. Attorney's Office in Detroit and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. At the request of the FTC, a U.S. District Court judge has barred the illegal spamming and frozen the defendants' assets. Federal criminal authorities yesterday executed a criminal search warrant and are in the process of arresting four principals in that case. In the second case, the FTC filed a legal action against Global Web Promotions, a spam enterprise that operates out of Australia and New Zealand.
Both operations have been identified by the anti-spam organization Spamhaus as among the largest spammers in the world. Consumers forward unwanted spam e-mail to the FTC, which maintains it in a database. Since January 1, 2004, consumers have complained to the FTC about 490,000 spam messages linked to Phoenix Avatar and 399,000 messages for Global Web Promotions.
FTC Case Against Phoenix Avatar
The FTC charged Phoenix Avatar and its Detroit-based principals with sending illegal spam to sell bogus diet patches. Consumers who wanted to purchase the products clicked on a hyperlink in the message and were connected to one of the defendants' many Web sites. The agency alleges the defendants were earning nearly $100,000 per month from product sales. The FTC alleges that the claims made for these diet patches are false and that the patches, which sell for $59.95, will have no effect at all.
The spammers hoped to obscure their identities by using innocent third party e-mail addresses in the “reply-to” or “from” fields of their spam - a practice known as spoofing. When spam was undeliverable and bounced back, tens of thousands of undelivered e-mails bounced to unwitting third parties, sometimes getting the third parties mislabeled as spammers, themselves.
My note: this is called joejobbing. We have been hit with this numerous times.
FTC Case Against Global Web Promotions
In the second case, the FTC filed legal charges against Global Web Promotions Pty Ltd., an Australian company that the FTC alleges is responsible for massive amounts of spam in the United States. Global Web not only advertised a diet patch similar to the one in Phoenix Avatar, it also claimed its human growth hormone products “HGH” and “Natural HGH” could “ maintain [a user‘s] appearance and current biological age for the next 10 to 20 years.”
Experts cited by the FTC dispute the claims, and the FTC alleged the claims are false. The products do not contain growth hormone of any sort, according to papers filed with the court. The products are shipped to consumers from within the United States. Consumers were ripped off when they bought either the diet patch being sold for $80.90 and the HGH products cost $74.95.
Don't be a sucker. Don't buy from Spam!
If you don't know the source of the email, report it to YOUR ISP.
In both cases, the FTC introduced as evidence thousands of examples of the defendants spoofing a wide array of victims, including AOL, Microsoft Network, and other companies and individuals.
Spoofing involves forging headers on e-mail to make it appear that they came from an innocent third party.
Undeliverable e-mail is returned to the innocent victim, often flooding their servers and interfering with normal operations. This process not only is prohibited by the CAN-SPAM Act, it also has worked real hardship on innocent businesses.

As I've said again and again. “If it‘s Spam it‘s a scam.”

Spotlight On: Bird Flu
------------------------------------------------------------
Bird Flu. It seems to be on minds of everyone everywhere around the world. The worries of a Pandemic with millions and millions, and millions of people dying from it.
Politicians like Chuck Schumer already in a tizzy panic wanting to seize a patent for an anti-bird flu drug (Tamiflu) from Roche AG.
Yes! Yes! Oh Yes! The gods of the pharmaceutical industry will save us all!
And the politicians will be right in stride with them. Can you imagine, the politicians in cahoots with the drug companies I can hear them now in their back room cutting a deal.
Politicians: “If we steal the patent on this medicine and give it to you how much money will you contribute to my re-election campaign?”
Big Pharma: “How much do you want?”
Some discussion takes place and they decide on some huge obscene amount of money
Big Pharma: “That amount is huge! In order to contribute that much we will need to give everyone a shot and we have to charge a lot for each shot. So how do we justify this?”
Politicians: “Oh... we‘ll call it a public safety issue... We‘ll declare a National Emergency... and pass a law making it illegal to refuse a shot. Then we'll get the press to print a bunch of articles telling everyone they will die unless they get these shots.”
Don‘t laugh... it could happen.
What is flu
Flu is an acute viral infection. Flu tends to come on suddenly with a fever of 102 to 104 deg F, severe headache, muscular aches and pains, exhaustion, and often a dry, hacking cough. Any of these symptoms can make for a poor night's sleep, leaving you fatigued the next day. Bird flu is no different, it is just deadlier because your body has not had a chance to build up immunity to this strain.
I have an idea.
How about instead of panicking...
We all start building up our health and immune systems?
For starters we could start to increase the amount of Vitamin C we take daily.
Bring that high. Say like 1000 mg.
Vitamin C is a water soluble vitamin. Any excess that your body does not need, your body will remove.
Here is something that you probably did not know.
Many, many, many years ago the human body could manufacture Vitamin C...just as today it can still manufacture Vitamin D.
Unfortunately, something changed in the human body and today we can no longer manufacture Vitamin C, though many other animals can.
So now we got the Vitamin C.
How about we start to get some immune system builders...
Got that pen and paper out?
Good.
Lets go on a shopping trip....
Lets start at the Chinese Grocery store, or herbalist.
First on the List:
Astragalus aka Astragalus membranaceus
There have been many scientific studies of astragalus in the United States and China. Astragalus root has been shown to increase nearly every phase of immune-system activity. One study even showed that use for thirty-five days raised immune-cell activity. This activity included the speed that immune cells develop, and the speed with which they travel in the body.
Dosage: Take astragalus before colds and flu strike. The recommended dosage for adults is 9 to 15 g of the dried root taken daily for about one month. Astragalus root, capsules, teas, tinctures, and other product forms are available in health food stores if you can not find it at your local Chinese Herbalist or grocery store. Astragalus has no reported side effects or contraindications.
Next...
Schisandra aka Schisandra chinensis
This herb is a shrub native to China. Its berries are used in traditional Chinese medicine to promote the production of body fluids and control coughing. But more importantly, they are used to increase the body's resistance to a a wide variety of harmful biological, chemical, and physical effects, and to help the body handle stress.
Dosage:Take 6 to 9 g of the dried fruit boiled down (like tomato paste) form once a day, or 15 to 30 drops of the tincture two times a day for up to one month. Schisandra also is available in other product forms in health-food stores. No side effects or contraindications have been reported.
Next...
Siberian Ginseng aka Eleutherococcus senticosus/Acanthopanax senticosus
Also known as: Eleuthero, Russian Ginseng, Devil's Shrub, Touch-me-not, Wild pepper, Shigoka, Ci Wu Ja or Jia
It is different than true Ginseng (Panax Ginseng).
Siberian ginseng has been mostly studied in Russia. In Russia it is mostly used to help the body adapt to stressful conditions. It is famous worldwide for its ability to restore vigor, enhance overall health, stimulate a healthy appetite, and a good memory.
Additionally numerous studies have shown Siberian Ginseng has the ability to make big improvements in peoples immune systems.
Next...
Echinacea aka Echinacea angustifolia, E. purpurea, or E. pallida aka Purple Cone Flower
It is an immune system enhancer. Taken frequently and in sufficient quantities, echinacea) is the best herb to take during this early stage of a cold or the flu. Echinacea is not an antibiotic menaing it does not kill germs. Instead, it works by stimulating the production of white blood cells, accelerating their maturation within the lymphatic tissue, and speeding their travel to the area of infection, where they help fight the invaders.
Next...
Garlic
Garlic is sometimes referred to as a truly natural antibiotic. This is because it can destroy harmful bacteria and viruses while being one of the few herbs that can be taken in large quantities, usually without dangerous side effects. However, eating more than five cloves a day risks heartburn and flatulence (as if the bad breath is not enough to drive away anything... wink), it will give you breath that will kill your love life, and garlic may also slow blood clotting, so if you are taking anticoagulants consult with your health-care provider before eating large quantities of garlic. Garlic contains allicin which is similar in it's function to penicillin.
Next...
Marshmallow aka Althaea officinalis
Also known as: mallards, schloss tea, mortification root, sweet weed, hock herb, wymote, mauls, cheeses (after the flat, round fruit)
This isn't the stuff that turns goey when you roast it over a fire or make smores with. Nope. But at one time marshmallows were flavored with the herb.
Marshmallow enhances the ability of white blood cells to kill mircobes.
Next...
Load up on Tea, Lemon, and Honey.
Get some good quality green tea. Drink at least 3 cups of green tea a day to boost your immune system.
If you do not exercise regularly start a light exercise program now. Today!
Start eating a lot of fruits and vegetables. Your goal is to eat 6-9 servings a day.
Get rid of excess stress.
Why? Excess stress will negatively affect your immune system. It lowers the ability of your immune system to fight off disease.
Here is what I suggest. Either meditate for 15 minutes to ½ hour a day.
Or listen to some very involving music that you can get lost in. Just the other day I was listening to some old (circa 1975) New Tony Williams Lifetime music, when Allan Holdsworth was the guitarist. Listening to the album was so relaxing. The music was very complicated, and had to be listened to with great concentration.
You could also find a partner and play games of chess, or find some other activity that takes a great deal of concentration.
So great that you can not do anything else but concentrate on what you are doing.
Practice good hygiene.
By that I mean wash your hands in hot water and use soap. Do it regularly.
Here is why.
Any type of flu is passed from hand to mouth... I'll repeat Any type of flu is passed from hand to mouth.
“Oh but surely you jest...” I can hear you saying.
No. Consider this. You wipe your nose, then you turn on the stove to heat up some water to make tea. Now the bacteria is on the stove knob.
How about this... You are at work. Someone has the flu, and like a dope they came in to work rather than taking the week off until they are better.
They blow their nose. They put some soup in the company microwave. They press the button and turn on the microwave.
Or take this scenario, some dummy who you don't even know has the flu and goes to a restaurant, or is riding on Mass Transportation. They sneeze or cough. Little particles come out. They land on the seat, or table, or chair. You touch it and...
So wash your hands regularly. Don't worry about using an anti-bacterial soap. Just use soap.
Now is NOT the time to start buying up all sorts of flu medicines like Tamiflu, etc. There are a bunch of bad characters selling fake Tamiflu on the internet. Gee... imagine that (he says in sarcastic shock and amazement)!
So here's the health plan.
- Build your immune system with herbs **Before** flu strikes.
Hey You! That means Today. Right Now. As the Nike ad says “Just Do it!”
- Get some moderate exercise every day.
- Eat right, and make sure you are getting lots of fruits and vegetables with a wide variety of colors.
- Get rid of stress.
- Wash your hands.
If in spite of all of this you do get the flu, then stay in bed.
Drink plenty of liquids.
Drink Ginger tea
Ginger Tea Recipe I like:
- Fresh Ginger Root twice the length of your thumb.
- Wash it then if you like, peel off the skin.
- Chop the root up
- Put it into 2 cups of water, and boil it down to one cup.
- Add lemon juice (and a little lemon zest) and honey to taste.
- Drink while hot.
It will burn going down, but it will clear things up pretty fast.
There is also the old standby of fresh made Chicken Soup. Put in a lot of garlic, onions, celery, and when eating the soup, add a dash of lemon juice.
Keep Healthy and Don't Panic.

First I want to acknowledge all the people who responded to our question regarding Hot Chocolate.
To update you on the situation, it seems like the most popular size is an 8 ounce container.
Everyone who sent an email last week about the Hot Chocolate will receive an 8 ounce jar as our way of saying Thanks!
We are on track. We had another taste test and the taste is almost there. Most likely in a couple of weeks we will be ready to start shipping.
And now for the news:
Turmeric Component Inhibits Cancer Growth
Researchers proved that curcumin (a major component found in Tumeric) triggers cell death in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) in a dose-dependent fashion, according to a study published in the October issue of Clinical Cancer Research (11, 19:6994-7002, 2005).
Researchers found HNSCC lines CCL 23, CAL 27 and UM-SCC1 treated with curcumin resulted in dose-dependent growth inhibition of all three cell lines. In vivo growth studies were conducted using nude mice xenograft tumors, in which curcumin was applied as a noninvasive topical paste to the tumors. Inhibition of tumor growth was observed in xenografts from the CAL27 cell line.
Researchers concluded curcumin treatment resulted in suppression of HNSCC growth both in vitro and in vivo. “Our data support further investigation into the potential use for curcumin as an adjuvant or chemopreventive agent in head and neck cancer,” the study authors wrote.
So how do you get Tumeric?
Good question.
Here are some tasty ideas.
Eat Yellow Curried Dishes.
Emulate W.C. Fields when someone asked him about what happened to the Rocky Mountain Goat he carried under one arm while swimming across a raging river. “It was delicious with Mustard!”
So go ahead. Slather lots of bright yellow mustard on foods.
There was a study regarding Vinegar
Vinegar may help dieters eat less
Vinegar Reduces the Body's Insulin Response To A Carbohydrate
Meal and Increases Ssatiety,... So Say Swedish Researchers.
Objective:
To investigate the potential of acetic acid (vinegar) supplementation as a means of lowering the glycemic index (GI) of a bread meal, and to evaluate the possible dose-response effect on postprandial glycaemia, insulinaemia and satiety.
Editor Note: The objective was to see if taking vinegar with a high glycemic food (bread) would lower the glycemic property and keep the feeling of satiety longer.
Subjects and setting:
In all, 12 healthy volunteers participated and the tests were performed at Applied Nutrition and Food Chemistry, Lund University, Sweden.
Intervention:
Three levels of vinegar (18, 23 and 28 mmol acetic acid) were served with a portion of white wheat bread containing 50 g available carbohydrates as breakfast in randomized order after an overnight fast. Bread served without vinegar was used as a reference meal. Blood samples were taken during 120 min for analysis of glucose and insulin. Satiety was measured with a subjective rating scale.
Results:
A significant dose-response relation was seen at 30 min for blood glucose and serum insulin responses; the higher the acetic acid level, the lower the metabolic responses. Furthermore, the rating of satiety was directly related to the acetic acid level. Compared with the reference meal, the highest level of vinegar significantly lowered the blood glucose response at 30 and 45 min, the insulin response at 15 and 30 min as well as increased the satiety score at 30, 90 and 120 min postprandially. The low and intermediate levels of vinegar also lowered the 30 min glucose and the 15 min insulin responses significantly compared with the reference meal. When GI and II (insulinaemic indices) were calculated using the 90 min incremental area, a significant lowering was found for the highest amount of acetic acid, although the corresponding values calculated at 120 min did not differ from the reference meal.
Conclusion:
Supplementation of a meal based on white wheat bread with vinegar reduced postprandial responses of blood glucose and insulin, and increased the subjective rating of satiety. There was an inverse dose-response relation between the level of acetic acid and glucose and insulin responses and a linear dose-response relation between acetic acid and satiety rating. The results indicate an interesting potential of fermented and pickled products containing acetic acid.
Basically this is saying that there is a direct relationship between increased acetic acid (vinegar) and satiety
The level of vinegar is equivalent to about two to three tablespoons.
Increasing intake of vinegar at mealtimes or consuming it in a drink may help dieters eat less and reduce cravings brought on by sugar peaks after meals.
Vinegar may help dieters eat less
Another study from Arizona State University was undertaken after Carol Johnston (a professor of nutrition at Arizona State University's East campus), found Five studies conducted in the 1980s that suggested that vinegar could improve insulin sensitivity and thus help control diabetes. For some reason, the mass media and the public never caught on. (Probably because it could not be patented by big Pharma - editor's comments)
Johnston used three types of subjects for her study. Some were diabetic, some were insulin-resistant (pre-diabetic), and some were healthy non-diabetics. She found that drinking vinegar helped reduce the usual blood sugar spikes in the insulin-resistant subjects. It helped the diabetics to a lesser extent.
In the study, the participants drank one of two solutions before eating a high-carb meal of a bagel and orange juice. Some subjects drank a vinegar solution (vinegar, water and saccharine). Others were given a placebo drink (water and saccharine).
What was amazing is that drinking vinegar had the same effect as the leading diabetes medicines, which can cost $800 to $1,800 per year.
She also discovered that her subjects were losing weight. She thought this may have been a fluke and wanted to confirm the weight loss was due to vinegar. So she conducted a longer study in which subjects consumed vinegar twice a day for four weeks.
Johnston suspects that vinegar affects carbohydrate digestion. She thinks that acetic acid-a component of vinegar-interferes with the enzymes that digest carbohydrates. So the simple carbs pass on through without stopping, much like fiber does.
Adding vinegar to the menu is much easier than massively cutting carbs. But it isn't very tasty.
So I guess based on these results, using a salad dressing of Olive oil and Vinegar is the best way to go. To make it really super healthy add fresh rosemary, chopped garlic, fresh basil and fresh oregeno.
By the way, forget about those Vinegar Diet Pills. They do not contain acetic acid. However, using any of the liquid flavored vinegars do. Vinegars like apple cider vinegar, red wine vinegar, balsamic vinegar. Also distilled (white) vinegar does as well, but it does not taste nearly as good as the naturally flavored ones do.
If you don't want to use salad dressing, you can mix a couple of tablespoons into water. In fact, if you mix a couple of tablespoons of apple cider vinegar into water, you will notice that less mosquitos and flies will bother you (no more bites).
Vinegar has many, many many other uses as well. How do I know?
Well, you could say I wrote the book on Vinegar.
