Stevia History Part II — Stevioside

1970’s Japan Approves Stevioside for food use instead of artificial sweeteners over health concerns (cont’d)

In the late 1980’s the FDA bans Stevia and Stevioside for use as a food additive, dietary supplement or flavor enhancer

Major multinational food companies convinced stevia and stevioside are safe, use Stevia extracts to sweeten foods for sale in Japan, Brazil, China, and other countries where it is approved as a table top sweetener. Smarter Health Corporation does not sell Stevia or Stevioside in the USA as a "Sweetener" or "Flavor Enhancer" because the United States FDA only allows stevia and stevia extract stevioside to be sold in the USA as a &quot:Dietary Supplement" or "Dietary Supplement Ingredient." You can buy our stevia extract our brand JAJA Stevioside™ Dietary Supplement in bulk packages or in Emperor’s Herbologist handy 15 Gram shake top bottle. We sell both wholesale and retail and ship worldwide.

1990 Purdue University Dental Science Research Group studies Stevioside for
fluoride and cavity reduction

Stevioside has won special interest from diabetics, persons with hyperglycemia, overweight persons, people with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and the diet conscious. Stevia and stevioside had been safely used in this country for decades. But in the 1980’s, shortly after the Monsanto owned artificial sweetener aspartame was approved for use the trouble for stevia and stevia extract stevioside began. Out of the blue, in the late 1980’s the FDA banned Stevia and Stevioside. Even owning a plant was illegal.

1991 FDA reverses itself and allows Stevia and Stevioside to be sold in the USA… as dietary supplements

In 1991 after much protest, letter writing, congressional questioning, and legal challenges, the FDA finally relented and declared that stevia and stevia extract stevioside could be imported and sold in the USA… with the caveat that it was labeled and only sold as a dietary supplement, or component of a dietary supplement. Pure unadulterated stevia and stevioside is completely safe for human consumption. This has been proven by numerous studies and Stevia and stevia extract stevioside use without problems around the world.

Emperor’s Herbologist JAJA Stevioside is pure unadulterated stevioside. Absolutely nothing is added. Look for pure stevioside powder it is safer and a better value. JAJA Stevioside goes thru exhaustive testing to assure it’s purity and safety.

2008 ADM and Coke Combined Muscle Get Pure Stevia Extract Approved As Food Additives by the FDA!

Coca-cola company along with ADM provide sufficient studies and the FDA approves stevia extract for food use, provided it has a minimum of 95% steviol glycosides. We all owe both of these companies a huge Thank You! Unfortunately, as of 2015 we still do not see stevia extract sweetened diet coke on the shelves.

December 2010 the European Commission Approves Sweetener Stevia Extract!

Their approval states:

“Steviol glycosides (E 960) are mixtures of steviol glycosides used a sweetener and extracted from the leaves of the stevia plant. This sweetener has up to 300 times the sweetness of sugar but an almost negligible effect on blood glucose levels; hence it is considered by some as an attractive substitute for sugar.

In a scientific opinion published in April 2010, the ANS Panel concluded that steviol glycosides are neither genotoxic nor carcinogenic and established an ADI of 4 mg/kg bw/day, in line with the recommendation of the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) in 2008. The Panel noted, however, that this ADI could be exceeded by both adults and children if this sweetener was used at the maximum levels proposed by the applicants.”

Thus, in November 2011, the Commission granted authorisation of the use of steviol glycosides as a sweetener in food. The food additive was added to the official EU list of authorized food additives.
